Celebrate Digital Citizenship Week: October 14-18, 2019

October 01, 2019 7:54 AM | Anonymous

This October, as we celebrate Digital Citizenship Week, we encourage you to take some time with your students to reflect on how you use technology both in and out of your classroom.

Digital Citizenship is a large part of the ISTE Certification process. In fact, one of the ISTE Standards for Educators is:

Educators inspire students to positively contribute to and responsibly participate in the digital world. Educators:

  1. Create experiences for learners to make positive, socially responsible contributions and exhibit empathetic behavior online that build relationships and community.
  2. Establish a learning culture that promotes curiosity and critical examination of online resources and fosters digital literacy and media fluency.
  3. Mentor students in safe, legal and ethical practices with digital tools and the protection of intellectual rights and property.
  4. Model and promote the management of personal data and digital identity and protect student data privacy.

As educators, we are all responsible for both teaching and modeling digital citizenship in our schools. How do you model and teach digital citizenship in your classroom or school?

This month we have created a game — The DigCit Amazing Race — that you can use with your students and staff. Follow these instructions and download the game to get started. Be sure to let us know how it goes. Post your thoughts to social media using the hashtags #IDEAil and #DigCit.
