Illinois’ Student Innovation Opportunities

What we do?

Organizations, Events and More

Illinois’ student innovation organizations create spaces where young people use their ideas to make, build, invent, code, design, solve problems, and bring projects to life. Through showcases, competitions, festivals, entrepreneurship programs, and hands-on learning, students do more than learn about a subject: they apply what they know, work through challenges, and make something they can share with others.

These experiences can help students build creativity, problem-solving, communication, collaboration, confidence, and leadership. They may also help students discover interests, connect learning to future opportunities, and find a place where their strengths can shine.

That is an important part of the technology conversation. Concerns about excessive screen time, harmful social media experiences, and inappropriate or unhelpful AI use deserve attention. But they should not be the whole story. When technology is used with purpose, students can move beyond passive consumption to create, test, revise, present, and teach. The focus is not technology for its own sake; it is meaningful learning, guided by educators and connected to real goals.

Together, these organizations make visible a fuller story: young people are not only using technology, they are using their knowledge, creativity, and initiative to make things that matter.

IDEA Guiding Principles: GROW + INSPIRE
By Greg McDonough • March 28, 2024
President John F. Kennedy once said “Leadership and learning are indispensable to one another.” IDEA's Students for Innovation: Advocacy Day exemplifies this quote unlike any other event I have been a part of as an educator. This annual event invites students and their teachers from across Illinois to showcase how they use technology in the classroom at the State Capitol building in Springfield. It’s an incredible opportunity for students to directly speak to their state representatives about the impact technology has had on them, and advocate for more technology in Illinois schools.
