Volunteering is often described as giving back, but volunteers receive something valuable too.

When educators volunteer with IDEA, they build relationships, practice leadership, develop skills, gain visibility, and discover professional opportunities. Our goal is simple: Volunteering with IDEA should provide as much value to the educator as it does to the organization. 

CONNECT

Many career opportunities begin with a connection. Someone makes an introduction, invites us into a conversation, or recognizes a strength we have not yet seen in ourselves.

IDEA creates spaces for those connections. Regional Communities bring educators together by place, while Spotlight Communities connect people through shared interests, roles, and passions.

Research from The DeBruce Foundation identifies career knowledge and strong networks as important elements of an empowered career. A connection made through IDEA could become a collaboration, mentorship, presentation, partnership, or future position.

I had no idea my own career would take the path it did. Volunteering with IDEA gave me a tremendous lift early in my career. I met some of the most amazing educators, and their ideas, encouragement, and support helped me grow in ways I could never have imagined on my own.

You do not have to be technical to raise your hand. You simply need to be interested in learning, excited about connecting with others, and ready to grow professionally.

GROW

Leadership does not require a title or mean doing everything yourself. It can mean welcoming someone, sharing a resource, facilitating a conversation, or encouraging another person to contribute.

IDEA offers a supportive place to practice leadership and strengthen skills in communication, facilitation, event planning, content creation, and mentoring. The [Time Well Spent research](https://www.ncvo.org.uk/news-and-insights/news-index/time-well-spent-national-survey-volunteer-experience/volunteer-impacts/) found that many volunteers gained skills, experience, and confidence.

Through IDEA's flexible Contribution Pathways, you can:

You do not have to run everything or make a major time commitment. Begin with one event, resource, story, conversation, or introduction.

This is what IDEA did for me in my early career. I met some of the most amazing educators who helped me better in ways that I would never have thought about without their help!  You don't have to be technical to raise your hand.  You just need to be interested in learning, excited about connecting with others, and wanting to grow professionally.
